Thrifty Tuesday: Transformational iPad Grants

TechChef4u devotes the majority of posts to the transformational power of technology integration. While “technology is rarely the goal”, truly access to the technology and device is integral.

Recently I was perusing one of my favorite sites for iPads and Art, Dryden Art (see original TechChef4u feature of Dryden Art page), and discovered that not only does she post amazingly awesome and spectacularly creative student examples… much of her technology was actually funded through grants as thinglinked below.

“We just finished an 18 month journey to raise funds every way we could to become a 1:1 iPad art room. Our goal was just reached in March 2014.” – Tricia Fuglestad

More often than not schools are unable to make the 1:1 leap and opt for internally-funded carts and class sets of devices and external grants. As I am not as familiar with grant writing and the process that it entails…, I asked the expert, Tricia Fuglestad. Not a hoarder of secrets, I decided to share her responses with the global edu-sphere:

Are these grants in house (money from PTO) or are they found online and available to all?

  • “I have been pursuing in house grants mostly. I have my grants posted for anyone to borrow from here. We received funds from district grants, fundraising via Edbacker.com, DonorsChoose.org, entering contests (won 3 with prize $ that went towards iPads), and fundraising through Artsonia.com”

How would you say these grants have ultimately impacted your classroom and your students?

  • “We would have very little tech if we didn’t seek alternative means to get it. Fundraising, grant writing, and contests got us everything from our smart board, projectors, to our 25 iPads. My district provides the art program a desktop computer and wifi access. At the beginning of this school year we had 12 iPads for student use in the art room from our previous efforts including our second place win in the McGraw-Hill STEMie awards. This meant that every time we created, one waited. It dictated how I would teach, how little we could accomplish, and how much ownership the students would have in their pieces. Sharing is great, but all the time wasn’t so great. After a big push this year, we finally have all the iPads we need to do whatever makes the most sense for learning content. Our limitations are gone! THAT is the best situation for meaningful technology integration.”

What advice would you give to other teachers seeking technology for their classroom?

  • “My first suggestion is to make a wish from iPevo’s wishpool. In a few minutes you can express a need for the monthly offering and it might arrive at your doorstep soon. My next suggestion is crowdfunding via sites like Donor’s Choose or Edbacker.com. Our projects were funded from generous donors from within our community, around the country (and world) who support engaging projects. It was also a wonderful advocacy tool for promoting our art program. Here is an example of our latest donor’s choose project. I also wrote up an article for School Arts Magazine about “Getting the Gear” for your program. View the article online here.

If you hadn’t already fallen in love with Fuglestad’s Dryden Art Creating on iPads site, then you are going to app-solutely flip over her collection of sample iPad grants.

Wicked-Good Wednesday: 3 Ideas Worth Stealing

I have found through countless speaking engagements and professional development workshops, what we may think is obvious or even “tired” … is sometimes exactly what someone has been looking for. On that same note, many times all it takes is a sample or a nibble of a great idea to spark creative juices.

In the words of Austin Kleon…

“There’s only stuff worth stealing, and stuff that’s not worth stealing.” – Austin Kleon

So, this alliterative Wednesday post is devoted to just that…Wicked Good Ideas Worth Stealing.

In an era of app-smashing and rapid ebb, flow, and feeds of ideas, truly…

“every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or more previous ideas” – Austin Kleon

What catches the TechChef’s eye? Clever items and purposeful ideas that can be adapted and remixed for different settings (e.g. classroom, stations, professional development…) as well as a myriad of uses and content areas. We are all inspired by others and today I want to share with you three ideas and a group of educators that inspires me…

App Dice: As part of their professional development objective for App + App + App= Lesson, Annie Barton (@anniebarton0) and Hayley Schirmer (@schirmer_hayley) “encouraged teachers to implement a culture of planning lessons around using apps that meet a certain criteria, rather than specific apps.”

Rolling the Dice with PD

This little gem crams choice, app smashing, and exploration in to a space smaller than a crouton. And I definitely had a “Why didn’t I think of this?” moment. So to explore this recipe for learning, you will need:

  • DiceEach die was based on a different principle of the E5 Instructional model (e.g. Explore, Explain, Elaborate) and apps were then selected to be used with each principle and assigned to be sides of the die.
  • Idea cards were also prepared for each app to provide additional curricular examples and ideas.

A full post about their process can be found on the Apps in Education page HERE.

Daily 5 App Menu: This creation from third grade teacher Monica Evon is definitely a keeper and a perfect recipe for learning. Everyone likes choice and this cleverly created menu is easily adaptable with additional activities and apps.

QR Code Board Games: While clearly designed to support and review phonics, the idea of QR Code Board Games and Task Cards is easily transferrable to other content areas and even the professional development realm. So this Wednesday… think about who inspires you and how you can honor their creations:

“In the end, merely imitating your heroes is not flattering them. Transforming their work into something of your own is how you flatter them. Adding something to the world that only you can add.” – Austin Kleon

Truly the showcase above is intended to whet your appetite for innovation. Now it is your turn… (and yes the TechChef will be cooking up a few remixed deconstructed dishes of her own as well…) so stay tuned..

Mindful Monday…Collecting Reflections

In preparing for a keynote this month to elementary preservice and inservice teachers at Texas A&M, I felt some self-reflection was warranted. I thought back to my preservice days and even my first year of teaching… with no curriculum, no mentor, no scope and sequence, an outdated textbook, and very little knowledge of what actual classroom management techniques looked like in practice. It truly was a sink or swim time and I found I dog-paddled in the deep end for some time.

While the technology, as you can plainly see, has evolved…

STREET ART-2

… and my hair and tan has dissipated somewhat, I still venture to pose the question…

“Are our preservice teachers any better prepared and equipped to handle the challenges of instruction, pedagogy, and technology integration in today’s classrooms?”

Though every institution and teacher is very different, I wonder if we as a collective whole of seasoned educators could sprinkle in a bit of wisdom and personal insight to better prepare these teachers for the limitless potential and critical challenges the 21st Century classroom holds.

Cathy Yenca did just that with her Message to 21st Century Pre-Service Middle School Math Teachers.

While I bring my own insight to the desk, technology allows for collecting an even broader perspective:

“The smartest person in the room is the room itself: the network that joins the people and ideas in the room, and connects to those outside of it…” – David Weinberger

So, what if the room was my global PLN? Imagine the insight and lessons that could be collected and shared…

Truly there are no right or wrong answers. I am looking to collect feedback and insight from a wide variety of teachers and classrooms (e.g. 1:1, BYOD, and not 1:1). There are no required questions (with the exception of basic information) as I am sure certain topics will prompt some of you to respond over others. Any and all thoughtful feedback is much app-reciated:

And because the TechChef doesn’t leave a blog without sharing a tasty morsel of integration delight… here are few ideas for using Google Forms with your students:

This last one was so Heck-Awesome both visually as well as with resources that I felt it necessary to also embed below:
