Marvelous Monday: A Motley of App Challenges 4 All

So what could be better than Freebie Friday and 50+ editable graphic organizers and templates for the iPad… a Collection of App Challenges, Task Cards, and PD for All?

Flashback to May of 2011… I started creating task cards for teachers utilizing creation-based apps and higher order thinking skills (pre Hot Apps 4 HOTS iBook):

App Task Cards: Flash forward to the summer of 2013 when TechChef gathered 100+ App-tivities task cards – these are actually perfect for modifying for students and utilizing them in stations.

App Integration Snapshots: Mosey on over to the fall of 2013 when the Eanes iVengers (my fellow Ed Tech crew) decided to start creating App Integration Snapshots for the staff (not necessarily task card or challenge cards BUT quick snapshots about what the app is and ideas for integrating the app in the classroom).

App Task Challenges: While these App Integration Snapshots are great to send out to teachers to give them a general overview of the app (especially if they have familiarity with the iPad), the idea of App Task Challenges are terrific for teachers that need step-by-step directions or a specific challenge to complete. A big thanks to Craig Badura (also creator of the “Digital Citizenship Survival Kit”) for creating these and Tony Vincent for sharing these.

iChallenges via SMORE: And one more for good measure…last week I delivered a workshop to Sanger ISD focusing on collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. I wanted to provide tools that could easily be adapted and integrated in the classroom and decided to build choice and allow for individual pacing. (Scroll down for each of the app tasks.)

iVocabulary: The Power of an Idea Shared

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Truly, I do not spend my day drinking iced lattes and googling myself… Today, one of Instructional Partners emailed me about some of the vocabulary resources I had shared utilizing iPads. Rather than log in to my Thinglink on iVocabulary, I googled “iVocabulary” and found….Melanie Burford’s Thinglink on iVocabulary. I am humbled and blessed by her kind words and flattery (as seen in image above).

While both of our Thinglinks are game boards and offer apps for iVocabulary on Listly’s (mine is the Scrabble board above and hers the game board below), I truly love what happens to an idea shared.


I really feel like Melanie polished the iVocabulary idea and added elements to hers that met the needs of her learners:

  • First, hers is a game board so learners will follow the resources in a sequential progression
  • Second, she created her own Listly’s and narrowed down the app choices that were originally presented
  • Third, she added Padlet at the first turn so learners could collaboratively brainstorm their integration ideas and have them archived for later reference
  • Fourth, she added a more formal exit ticket in the form of a Google Form for learners to share a more specific integration idea

One of my favorite examples was a Frayer model found on the web and completed in Explain Everything and a charming Videolicious of a student explaining the meaning of “frantically” and using it in context. Though the “Dont’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” ala Puppet Pals is a close third.

And truly… back to my not so subtle discussion about sharing online… I think  Melanie sums it up:

Melanie cited my work in her own presentation. Many times I choose a Creative Commons license for my work. If you plan on publishing online, consider using this resource. My advice would be to choose to allow modification of your work (as long as others share alike) but to restrict commercial use of your work (so others can not profit from work you freely distribute online). If you base your creations on someone else’s, another way to provide credit to the original is to include a Source work URL:

Thinglink… the ultimate app-smasher!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, the art of app-smashing is not the action of pressing on an app  until it jiggles or an individual app at all (well, it is an app, but I digress). I feel I must credit Greg Kulowiec with the terminology as he offers a course on it and has prepared the first official definition.

“App Smashing Defined: The process of using multiple apps in conjunction with one another to complete a final task or project.”

But truly the art of app-smashing has been well documented for some time. Educators like myself, Laura Wright, Lisa Carnazzo, and many more showcase multiple examples online everyday. Laura Wright actual coined the phrase “multi-apping” in a post I shared in November of 2012 to refer to the same phenomenon. Moving past semantics and terminology, I think that the ultimate focus on app-smashing is the intended purpose or result and the workflow necessary to achieve it.

I recently stumbled upon the Definitive App Smasher’s Guide pictured above (a FREE 13 page download from Miguel Guhlin). The resource is available in ePub and PDF and is a really great example to showcase the flow and provide additional concrete guided tasks.

As I app-arently cannot finish a post without sharing a thinglink and 3 of my last posts have focused on the tool, I think it only prudent to share how Thinglink can be the ultimate example of app-smashing! Think about it…Thinglinks are an image.

  • Images: Images can be created, annotated, and embellished with Pic Collage, Keynote, Strip Designer, and Skitch.
  • Thinglink Nubbins: From there, Thinglink merely adds nubbins to those images. Nubbins can be either plain text or anything with a link.
  • Links: What has a link? Um… pretty much anything. Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive, YouTube, Prezi, Quizlet. iMovie Trailers and Puppet Pals can be exported to YouTube or a Dropbox… ScreenChomps and Tellagami’s can be shared with URLs. Each photo or video could be an individual example of app-smashing.

Miguel Guhlin shares a perfect example of this as Haiku Deck images can be exported to the camera roll and then turned into a narrated video using Explain Everything.

So what could this look like? For months I have been sharing the potential of Thinglink and just recently I stumbled upon a teacher using for exactly that purpose… sharing student work as an ePortfolio!!!

I feel this just might be the pinnacle of app-smashing… but truly you be the judge. How will you channel and showcase your student’s inner product-based selves through app-smashing?

Fabulous Fugelstad: App-tastic Artistic Epicocity

Thank heavens for my obsession with Pinterest. Last night I lay awake scouring pins and hit the motherload! I happed upon the Dryden Art weebly page via this pin (seen below). At first I just thought it was an artist showcasing their personal art. Upon further inspection and exploration, I discovered a treasure trove of student examples from this K-5 Art teacher.

Greathouse’s GREAT Curricular Use of Puppet Pals

Greathouse’s middle school class has done it again (check out their first iLesson using Explain Everything)! Rather than have students read the entire chapter on climate, she created an iJigsaw app-tivity. Students were divided into groups and assigned  a section of the climate chapter to summarize and report on. They were given the freedom to choose how and which app would be best to present the content they were responsible for.

Given the freedom to shine, this group chose Puppet Pals and really did the app and the content justice, if I do say so myself.

iVocabulary: TCEA 2013

Reunited…for a workshop at TCEA, Yolanda Barker and I will be presenting “iVocabulary” at TCEA 2013.

iVocabulary Workshop Description:  Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking are integral to developing language. This session will utilize the four skills to focus on multiple ways to develop vocabulary utilizing mobile devices in the iClassroom. The tour of resources will include specific content-based glossary apps and apps that allow you to create your own flashcards and personal glossaries (e.g. Quizlet) and apptivities that extend the vocabulary (e.g. creating a Frayer model in Popplet Lite or a vocabulary sorting activity in iCardSort). Vocabulary development will increase with use of video creation utilizing apps like Mad Lips and Puppet Pals. Writing and Reading will be supported with annotation apps (e.g. Notability, PaperPort Notes) and book creation apps (e.g. Scribble Press, Albums FX Lite). The session will culminate with “surprisingly educational” apps that support the four skills (e.g. StoryLines for Schools and TypeDrawing for Free).

Thinglink Framework: Yolanda’s graphically inclined hubby created a Scrabble board to house all of the links for the course. 8 List.ly lists of apps, a Prezi of samples, and much more is hidden in the image below.

A Prezi of iVocab products was created to showcase products and samples for each of the 8 app categories.

Science and Social Studies Stripped Down

Going Batty: Hot off the iPress! I received a batty iLesson from Laura Wright, a 3rd grade teacher at Eanes Elementary (check out this Smilebox about how she manages the iPads in her classroom). She piloted a 1:1 last year and continues to trail blaze the iFrontier.

Laura shared a 5 page student-created comic which focuses on bat myths and reality (portions seen below). Her students even coined a new phrase “multi-apping” which means creating something in one app and applying it to another – wonder how long it will take for that phrase to appear in the urban dictionary? This particular method can be seen in the last page of the comic where the student set a scene in Puppet Pals, took a screenshot of said scene, exported it to the photo roll, and plopped it into the Strip Designer comic.

Laura mentioned that the students truly loved this app and let their creativity run wild as can be seen in the bat “cover page”, photos of students with bats in their hair, and the conclusion with Obama telling America that bat funding would be increased this year. This comic showcases evidence of student learning while also capturing distinct personality and humor.

Earth Landings: The very same week, second grade teacher Lisa Carnazzo sent me her class using Strip Designer. Looks like her class also experimented with some multi-apping. They explored landforms in Google Earth and classified and labeled them in Strip Designer.  (More pics and info about this iLesson can be viewed here.) Lisa did mention that while the students enjoyed the project, some of the elements proved difficult to manipulate for the primary students.

Channel your Inner Doogie

A request from a “Novel Ideas” teacher to provide students with blogging info led me to reflect on my own journey with blogging. Two years ago I began the TechChef4u blog out of a need to have a place to put resources and info for an upcoming tech camp and partially as an online brain dump – a place to put ideas to retrieve and access later. At that point, I didn’t realize that I would have an audience or that people would utilize these resources to benefit their students. Upon reflecting on my blog and reviewing tips for novice bloggers, I noticed a significant change in the layout and form of my more recent blogs.

 

The Side by Side app compares an earlier blog I wrote (on the left) with a more recent one (on the right). Since that earlier blog two years ago, I have tried to be more concise, use spacing and images to improve layout and readability, and clean up my bullet points and subheadings.

The Original Blogger: Students in the Novel Ideas class would be blogging about books that they read and “selling” the book to others through their blog review – much like a book commercial. For some reason, my mind drifted to the original blogger and my childhood crush, Doogie Howser M.D. Realizing that these students would not know who this pre-internet reference was, I opted against using the following video:

 

 

Blogging Tips for Students: Rather than showcase Doogie’s concise blogging style (as seen here on his Blogspot), I opted to merely curate a list of novice blogging tips gleened from the internet:
  1. Choose the right topic / define your goals / stay true to your blog – this is pretty simple as the blogs will all focus on book reviews
  2. Ask for Help / Find a Role ModelMrs. Schubert, our librarian, shared a list of student book chat blogs that would assist students in finding their own voice
  3. Be Yourself / Throw Perfectionism out the window – encourage students to write the same way they talk and emphasize the content over form. That is not to say that grammar and spelling should be be overlooked but merely that students should feel free to find their own voice, flow, and style
  4. Visual Layout –  Utilize font and formatting features such as bold and bullets and subheadings and paragraphs to make your article easier to read and digest
  5. Pretend you have an audience –  even when you don’t
  6. Add Photos and Multimedia 
    1. Use photos from sites like Morgue File and Photo Pin
    2. Create your own visuals on the iPad using apps like Pic Collage and Strip Designer
    3. Compose audio reviews using the Audioboo app and embed the final product on your site
    4. Include URL’s to supporting or further info
    5. Include movies as book trailers (created with iMovie, Puppet Pals, or Animoto)
  7. End Post with Question – a great way to snag your readers and get them thinking

 

Feed Novel Ideas with RSS: The teacher had also requested info about RSS feeds. She wanted an app to allow students to follow other’s blogs and have access to them on the iPad. I located Feedly which works in conjuction with our google emails. It was the perfect app to search for blogs and articles and access them in a beautiful and visual way.

Integrating Infographics into the iClassroom

So TechChef4U has caught the Infographics Influenza! Being a bit of a Pinterest fanatic, I have found an easy way to support and feed my Infographics Habit. Continuing to stock pile Educational Infographics on my Pinterest board, I waited until I found an app-ortunity to share these resources with one of my teachers and create a delectable lesson. During my stint as an 8th Math tutor, I had a few of the teachers approach me about engaging math lessons that they could utilize with 8th Math after the STAAR test. I mentioned the topic of infographics and shared a few of the ones I had collected. Then I worked with one of the teachers in particular, Mrs. Simpson, to hash out the details.

Common Core Standards: Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears”

What is an Infographic? Before we continue… let’s define and explore the topic of “infographics” further. No need to recreate the wheel… Kathy Schrock has already blazed the trail and created an amazing Vimeo video on the topic.

8 Great Infographic Stations: Teacher could choose a different infographic (from the list of 120+) for each station or have all of the students use the same infographic for each station. Infographics can be accessed from computers or mobile devices (as most are just images and not flash-based). Note: The EDU Infographic Pinterest board has been curated and reviewed mostly via a mobile phone – please preview and preselect infographics prior to utilizing the resources with your students.

  1. Station 1: List 5-10 Observations or Trends for the Infographic.
    1. This could be accomplished with Todays MeetEdmodo, or Lino It  from a mobile device or computer.
  2. Station 2: Generate 2 Truths & a Lie for the Infographic (prompt parter or other groups to determine which statements are true and which ones are lies).
    1. This could be accomplished with Todays MeetEdmodo, or Lino It  from a mobile device or computer.
    2. Todays Meet (modification): use Todays Meet activity as an exit ticket, print the transcript from Todays Meet, use as a warm-up the next day. Students would choose 4-6 statements and prove/disprove them.
  3. Station 3: Create a Word Problem based on data provided in the infographic (pass your problem to a partner or other group to solve).
    1. Word Problems could be created with a basic voice recording app or apps like Talking Tom & Ben, Puppet Pals, Sock Puppets, QR Code Beamer, Mad Lips, Comic Touch Lite, etc…
    2. Word Problems could be created with Web 2.0 tools like Make Belief Comix and Voki.
  4. Station 4: Answer Specific Questions on the Infographic (teacher could create a task or recording sheet for a specific infographic prior to that day.)
    1. Based on the trend and data given, make predictions or conclusions.
    2. Determine validity of statements.
    3. Teacher could generate multiple True/False Statements (prior to class) and have students prove/disprove them (some could require calculation).
    4. Create a Data table for one of the graphs.
    5. Calculate Central tendency for the data.
    6. Determine what the population of interest is.
    7. Locate bias in the infographic.
  5. Station 5: Determine how the information could be misused by supporting two separate arguments with the same graph, data set, or infographic.
  6. Station 6: Write a story about a person that the population describes or Create a Popplet to illustrate an individual from the population sample (similar to Visual.ly Twitterize).
  7. Station 7: Create a sample poll with questions that could have been asked to generate the infographic given? Then poll actual students in your classroom or at your campus and compare the data (use tools like Poll Everywhere, Edmodo, or  Google Forms – all 3 can be accessed from a mobile device and computer).
  8. Station 8: Determine data and questions for the infographic that you feel should have been included or would benefit the study.
