So… I was minding my own business… drinking my triple grande iced vanilla latte… when Terri Eichholz (@terriechholz) tweeted me that Canva had 27 FREE EDU PDF Lessons… and everything after that is kind of a blur…

While I loved all of the lessons, I found them easier to glean through if they were all on one page and sorted by image… so I created a board for Canva EDU Lesson Plans...

What Can I Expect From These Canva EDU Lessons?

20If you peruse the board, you can find lessons for a variety of age groups and content areas. My favorites are the Facebook banners for Scientific Elements, Social Media Profiles for Historical Figures, Candy Math Ratios, Author’s Point of View, and a Wedding Invitation for a Chemical Reaction.

I have to say I quite accidentally happed upon these winsome student-created iBooks in a twitter feed. Truly, I do not use the word “winsome” lightly… these exceptionally creative ¬†inquiry books are charming and delightfully designed.

Scientific Narrative Story: Each book is a narrative story that blends scientific fact and fantasy with a dash of personification. While the books encompass multiple technologies from hand drawn images to text written in Pages, the final product was assembled in Book Creator.

Totally Terrific Integration and Celebration Thursday

Feel like I am on a roll of alliteration:

So, no need to break the trend. Working in a 1:1 iPad K-12 school district, technology is beginning to be integrated seamlessly within the classroom as we have 24/7 access to a device and do not need to schedule computer lab time. Whether a school has access to a 1:1, BYOD, or designated lab space, technology infused projects should be aligned to pedagogical best practices, curriculum, and standards. One district has begun aligning these projects to our state technology standards.

Threading Technology Within the Standards

Laura Moore, a former colleague of mine and current member of my PLN, shared a handful of truly terrific and thorough lesson ideas using open-ended technology tools and apps that met both state content and technology standards. Most of us know that we are integrating these standards but actually aligning and stating the standards is truly a best practice.

Tailoring Technology Integration

While the SBEC standards are specific to our Texas teachers, I think using the ISTE NETS should be a best practice to assessing student products and teaching strategies when integrating technology in to curriculum:

On that same note, 4th grade NEISD Miss Kelly Richter shared her spin on a terrific student-created Thinglink that was aligned to the standard Laura featured in her post.

So let’s take this technology integration and showcase one step further…

A 1:1 iPad program is a huge community investment and if parents are educated about the use of technology in their students’ classrooms, they are more apt to supporting the initiative because they truly understand how they are being used as a tool for their students’ learning.” – Marianna Husain

Thoughtful Showcase and Celebration of Technology Integration

I have to say Marianna Husain takes a truly thoughtful app-roach to celebrating and showcasing technology integration on her campus. Not only does she blog about the lesson and share samples and digital artifacts, she gets the students and parents involved.

“As a parent of a kindergartner at my school, I thought about how lucky I was to be so connected to our school because if I relied solely on my 5 year old telling me about his day, I might not have any idea what was going on. The cafeteria stamps kids’ hands to let them know about lunch account balances, so why not a sticker about a project on a blog?” – Marianna Husain

How does she do it?, you inquire. Marianna created a sticker that each student in the class that was featured on the blog would wear home that day as a talking point for parents. Marianna isn’t quite sure if its pure magic, but I have to say it is sheer genius.

Marianna shared a few advantages of using this app-roach:

  • Students: “The kids simply beam at the sticker!”
  • Teachers and Parents: “The teachers also email the link to their parents. We have seen more comments from parents on the blog and emails back to teachers about how they have told grandparents and other loved ones about their projects. It makes it so easy just to send a link.”

Tips and Takeaways

So to recap… when planning, preparing, and posting technology-infused student projects, keep these things in mind:

  • Have I aligned this project to my content standards?
  • Have I aligned this project to the ISTE NETS or state technology standards?
  • Have I published student work to create an authentic learning opportunity?
  • Have I shared these projects with parents?

App Synergy: The Art Form of App-Smashing

If you have been trolling¬†the net (pun intended if you read my last post) for more app-smashing antics… you simply must check out this video from Kris Kling, fellow Starbucks junkie and 2013 Apple Distinguished Educator (@misterkling).

The video below smashes the apps Tellagami, Explain Everything, and iMovie to create a narrated treat and includes some ideas for composing your own logo which goes hand in hand with a recent post, A Brand Called Me, which reveals an amazing iTunes U course to support students in discovering their own personal brand.

The iPad by design is a personal device that can create a very unique learning perspective if students are allowed to explore and are not inhibited by a one-app-fits-all philosophy. One wouldn’t limit an art student to a monochrome palette and limited media and tools.¬†So why would we hand over a device that offers limitless potential to a student and shackle their creativity to one app?

I venture to kick app-smashing up a notch. What if we assume that app-smashing could indeed be an art form if achieved in a thoughtful manner? The term app synergy appeared in the App Synergy column of App Advice (Apps Gone Free) as early as April 2012.

Lenny Liang said it best:

“A single app can be powerful. Many apps, working together, can be transformative. It is sometimes difficult to perform the task you want using only one app. It‚Äôs often necessary to settle for the best an app can give, even if it‚Äôs not exactly what you need. App synergy overcomes those limitations by transcending the limits of single apps, creating results that no one app could achieve alone.”

Since the phrase app synergy app-tly app-lies to our app-lication of apps, I thought I would create a concise definition.

App Synergy: the transformative art form of smashing and assembling apps to form a cohesive creation which ultimately holds more substance and purpose than the sum of its individual app elements.

As Tellagami was showcased here today, I wanted to share a few more examples of how the app can be smashed with other apps to create a detailed and thoughtful learning project.

Technology Tailgate shares a 5th grade assignment that smashes WordFoto, Phoster, and Tellagami to teach findings about scientists.

Karen Ogen shares a 1st grade assignment that smashes the Tellagami and iMovie (Karen compiled the videos using Windows Movie Maker but iMovie could achieve the same result) to teach about the sun and moon. While the backgrounds were clearly hand drawn and then captured using the iPad camera, the same activity could be recreated with students drawings using any sketching app.

Laura Chaffey’s class shares one of my favorite purposeful app-smashing projects. Her ¬†primary students composed a persuasive piece depicting why they would be a good candidate to be recruited for Mars One. The apps smashed were the camera, Google Earth, Tellagami, and iMovie.

Laura even went so far as to create a 3 page PDF to provide lesson ideas for integrating Tellagami and even a tutorial.

Inquiry Based App-tivities

Those of you who are teachers will know that it is hard to not wear your teacher hat when you have your mommy apron on. As a parent of a now first-grade student, I want to provide learning opportunities, foster creativity and inquiry, and find some way to archive the learning experiences. As a child’s audio and video speaks (pun intended) so much more than an image alone, I find it a perfect medium for archiving student work.

These ideals became the driving force between one of my latest sessions:

Leveraging BrainPop JR to Support Inquiry-Based App-tivities: This session showcases how BrainPop JR videos can be used as springboard for curiosity and exploration. Pop on in (at 2pm on Monday the 24th) to see how to dive in and expand these inquiries using apps and web tools to enrich a preschool or primary student’s instructional realm of knowledge.

It all began with his interest in presidents and planets. BrainPOP JR provides excellent videos to support these interests which fill in the foundational information and knowledge on these topics in an engaging manner.

From there, this Thinglink will showcase how apps can expand and extend these inquiries.

Naturally, Natural iResources

Naturally, I am always thrilled to share student-creations. Today I am even more excited to share three versions of a similar project. The beauty of the iPad is that the device builds in the capacity for differentiated learning and personalization of products.

All three of the classes below focused their instruction on resources (e.g natural and energy) … in a variety of ways.

Lisa Carnazzo’s second grade class (@CarnazzosClass) used the Pic Collage app to showcase how they use natural resources in their everyday life (more examples on their class wiki).¬†Check out a few other iLessons from the creative Carnazzo iClassroom!

Greathouses’s 6th grade class (@scienceswag1) used the Flowboard app to display their research findings on energy resources (more examples here). Check out a few other iLessonsfrom the app-tastic Greathouse!

Verret’s 6th grade class (@MrsVerret) used the Strip Designer appto debate the advantages and disadvantages of 9 different energy resources. As the 6th and 7th grade students have only had their iPads for the last 7-8 weeks, I was very curious as to classroom teacher’s impressions of the app-tivities achieved with them. Verret shared that teachers:

“have struggled in the past to come up with a fun activity to satisfy their TEK (yes, we are one of the few states that are not Common Core) for researching and debating the advantages and disadvantages of 9 different energy resources. (They’ve) tried everything from a verbal debate to writing a persuasive essay. With 6th graders, both of those are a bit much. Having 1:1 iPads enabled (teachers) to come up with some other ideas for this requirement.”

She went on to describe the app-tivity in further detail:

“Students first used their devices for research, and then applied their findings to create projects using the Strip Designer app. Using their creativity to convince the reader which energy resource was best and worst was the main requirement. When that was fulfilled, students inserted more pages to highlight the other resources‚Äô advantages and disadvantages.¬†The (Strip Designer) app was wonderful to use for both the creative student and the student whose strengths lie elsewhere. Inserting text and photos was easy to do, and the app was intuitive enough for those students who wanted to explore and tweak the pre-made templates.”

I simply must say that I feel so blessed to work with such amazingly articulate and innovative educators that share creative pedagogically sound instructional resources. And on that note, Verret was gracious enough to share her grading rubric for this particular project.

Stripped Down: The Integrated iClassroom

Bumped in to the creative and delightful Laura Wright yesterday. Here third grade class is the author of “The Life of an Eanes Pioneer”. I have to tell you that there are so many wonderful and exciting things happening in our iClassrooms every day – I am hard pressed to keep up with documenting all of them. Laura took some time out of her afternoon to share a project-based mixed media iLesson that involved students researching a breed of spider, creating an anatomical spider based on that research, and then designing a comic using the Strip Designer app to accompany their spider that would concisely showcase 3-5 facts about their spider. All of the final products were displayed on a bulletin board in the classroom.

What I truly love about this project it was not solely achieved on the iPad. Truly not everything has and should be achieved on the device. We have to ask ourselves, “does the device enhance learning for this project?” Kudos to Laura and her holistic approach to designing her iLessons and truly infusing elements of project-based learning, choice, and collaboration. What I also app-reciate is the idea that not every product has to be digital. While I am a proponent of paperless classrooms and mobile integration, I think there is a time and place to print and retain tactile projects. (Clearly case in point.) In addition to the spider wall (which is truly amazing to see in person), Laura can assemble all of the one-page PDF’s in to one book and make the spider discovery book available to parents and students to download in iBooks as one complete PDF.

Her class is currently working on a follow-up book to the Eanes Pioneer History and has begun their study on bat conservation. I cannot wait to see what her group of students turns out next. Greathouse's GREAT Curricular Use of Puppet Pals

Greathouse’s middle school class has done it again (check out their first iLesson using Explain Everything)! Rather than have students read the entire chapter on climate, she created an iJigsaw app-tivity. Students were divided into groups and assigned ¬†a section of the climate chapter to summarize and report on. They were given the freedom to choose how and which app would be best to present the content they were responsible for.

Given the freedom to shine, this group chose Puppet Pals and really did the app and the content justice, if I do say so myself.
