Sharing Comes Full Circle

A few days ago, I received an email from Jeanne Reed:

“Congratulations on delivering a phenomenal iTunes course! I think I am your biggest fan, at least on the West coast! You always inspire me to learn more and try to share more. I seriously can’t wait to read your blog when you update it because it has been incredibly valuable to me.¬†I’m trying to help teachers in my district to integrate technology in the classroom especially with our new iPads. My latest adventure was trying to help introduce Comic Life to teachers.”

 

She went on to request to use and revamp the iPad product rubric I shared in a previous post. As I did not personally create the rubric, I wanted to double-check with the teacher who did, Nicole Greathouse, to request permission. She had no qualms with the resource being shared and revised, so I left Jeanne with one condition…
… whatever you create with it, please shoot me a copy.
I would love to see it and share it with my teachers and readers…

 

In the meantime, Jeanne went on to divvy out a stellar digital professional development resource (that she gave me permission to share with my teachers and readers): a Keynote and video presentation highlighting Comic Life and featuring a few TechChef4u creations. Please enjoy and please remember that sharing online does make a difference and it does come full circle!

Creative Commons: When discussing sharing, I only feel it proper to discuss Creative Commons. If you are interested in licensing your work for sharing online, consider visiting Creative Commons. Creative Commons breaks down in to 3 categories (modification, commercial use, and attribution).
     

  • Modification: Do you want others to be able to modify your work? This is truly a personal choice and is not as clear cut as yes or no. Creative Commons offers a third option – to allow modification of the work as long as others also share it and use the same license.
  • Commercial Use: Do you want to allow commercial use of your work? I typically say no as I do not want what I share on my blog or social networks to be possibly used for financial gain by another entity.
  • Attribution: As many of you are teachers, you realize how time-consuming the resources we share online are to create. While you don’t mind others sharing your work, I am assuming you would at least like credit for it. ūüėČ This section of Creative Commons allows users to title the work, add a url the work needs to be sourced to, and even give additional credit to the original source.
 

Creative Commons your Creations!

 

From there, Creative Commons provides a custom license that can be embedded on a site or copied and pasted and used as a footer on a document. Hope this crash course in Creative Commons licensing helped and hopefully motivated others to share and share alike. This is even a good habit to teach our students when publishing their own work.

English Stripped Down Continued…

Last semester (it feels so long ago when I say it like that), I shared a “Stripped Down” series that showcased how students are using cartoon apps like Strip Designer and Comic Life to showcase learning across the curriculum.

The “Stripped Down” series included:

  • Science and Social Studies Stripped Down¬†which showcased Laura Wright’s Class Bat research and Lisa Carnazzo’s class study of landforms.
  • History Stripped Down¬†which featured Fiske’s class analysis of the key figures in the Enlightenment and included a student app review of Strip Designer.
  • English Stripped Down kicked the series off with a student-created rendition of a Hero’s Tale and a Beowulf retelling.
  • Digital Artifacts (while not part of the original series) shared a primary example of how Strip Designer could be used to showcase learning in the form of a pattern scavenger hunt.

 

As we are all returning to school shortly (or have already started back), I thought I would revive the series with two more student-created graphic novels created by Westlake HS Students. Both of the strips were created with the Strip Designer app which was provisioned for each high school student through the self service app on their iPad to support this type of product creation.

Rockysseus: I love that students used a combination of filtered actual photos, hand drawings, and captions to showcase their Hero’s journey. Also love the text which denotes scene changes, plot highlights, and supernatural intervention.

The Lion King Odyssey: This comic presupposes that Mufaseus lived. I enjoyed how the students showcased point of view and how they were “playing” each one of the characters. The idea of incorporating Lion King pics and storyline allowed for a fractured fairytale or mock fan fiction element and was truly engaging.

Westlake HS students are part of a 1:1 iPad initiative. More info about this project can be viewed here (Read my observations during a recent site visit). The Board at Eanes ISD recently approved the 1:1 iPad initiative for K-12 students (view board presentation here)!

iPad Tips 4 Parents

Most of the time I focus on integration tips and examples for teachers. Today, I decided to change the pace and share some management tips for the device at home. With a 1:1 iPad initiative in full swing, setting boundaries with the iPad at home can become an issue. To support our Eanes parents, we developed a Digital Learning Parent seminar series.

5 iPad tips for Parents: One of the resources created for this series was 5 iPad Tips for parents created by our very own Tim Yenca (aka @mryenca). The resource thoroughly covers:

  1. Vigilance: suggests homework be completed in a common area and iPad stored and charged in a common area (say goodnight to your iPad)
  2. Accountability: shares how to manage the multi-tasking bar (great video example)
  3. Notifications: discusses how to turn off notifications to manage distractions (Do Not Disturb info)
  4. Guided Access: restricts students to one app (more info here)
  5. Restrictions: restrict access to age-appropriate content and apps (NB has great info on their student device restrictions’ settings).

English Stripped Down: A Student's Perspective

Recently, I visited with Mrs. Haneman, a HCMS social studies teacher and mom of a Westlake student. This is the first year for both the 8th grade 1:1 iPad initiative as well as the 1:1 for freshman and sophomore’s at the high school. As we all strive to embrace this new technology and integrate it effectively into our lessons, I think it is valuable to reflect on our student’s impressions of the device as well. (Mathy Cathy showcases an excellent example of challenging student’s perceptions of math on the iPad with augmented note-taking strategies).

In this instance, I focus on “The Odyssey” and a “Hero’s Journey”. This assignment utilized the Strip Designer app¬†and was created by Mrs. Haneman’s son. While the student admitted to appreciating all of the artistic features the app offers, he did say “it took a long time to work the mechanics, over drawing with pencil and paper, but since I’m not a good artist, I liked the result better.” ¬†He drew the main character as a shadowy figure with no face and utilized a cross hatching technique. The app also allowed for him to use mix media and incorporate internet images for backgrounds and other characters. For an admittedly unprofessional artist, I found the comic to be easy to understand and follow and charming. As graphic novels become a more and more popular art form (check out this one on the Odyssey), it is exciting to see how students are able to easily access and embrace this media using the iPad as a tool. Check out this graphic adaptation of the Battle of Troy using the Comic Life app.

As I had already picked up a cape from Turning Point Technologies and met with the app developer of Comic Life, it seemed only fitting to render my ISTE 2012 excursion as a comic.
