BYOD Potpourri

Recently, I have been publishing some content on “device agnostic tools” for the BYOD classroom. While these tools were shared to support a BYOD setting, truly they could easily be app-lied in a variety of settings as they are applications that work across a number of platforms and devices.

Totally Edupreneurial Tuesday: The Future of Ed Tech?

You don’t have to be a futurist to know that customization and tailored content should be a staple in education planning as we move forward. While there are many open-ended tools and curricula available to the public education sector, they are typically designed with a national or global audience in mind and built to please the masses.

“Clearly there is no packaged curriculum or tool to rule them all. So what is a district to do when served a robust and festive platter that doesn’t truly meet their individual needs? Do they pick and choose which dishes can be consumed, starve, or do they cook up a new recipe for learning?” – Lisa Johnson

ExitTicket Story:

So… let’s take this idea of customization one step further. Rather than making do with a one-size-fits-all commercial product, some districts have decided to create the very tool they need. Perhaps the future of Ed Tech is… Edupreneurship? Take ExitTicket for example:

“Dr Waters (Superintendent and CEO of Leadership Public Schools), and the teaching team tried several technologies, and among them was a set of Quizdom Clickers used for audience polling. They found that students enjoyed the immediate feedback and scores started improving. But it wasn’t achieving the type of proficiency gains Dr. Waters was hoping for, and the clickers were very limited in their features and functionality.” – ExitTicket Story

Dr. Waters, Dr Refsland (an ed tech entrepreneur) and a team of Leadership Public Schools teacher designers began developing ExitTicket to give teachers a powerful tool to accelerate student learning. Flash forward a few years and ExitTicket, an assessment tool that boasts amazing results with student gains of 2 to 3 years in only a year, is now available to the public. A Sampling of ExitTicket Features with Power-Packed Potential:

  • Projector View vs. Teacher View: Teachers only project the data they would like students to see.
  • Launch Tickets for Homework: Math and History teachers (as well as classes that are looking to differentiate as well as flip their classroom) will do cart wheels for this feature! Basically you create a quick assessment to match your homework and you add a qualifier (e.g. 70 and below = green / 80-90 = proficient) and then you can prepare different assignments for students based on how they scored as well as address these issues in real time:
    • Qualifier Assignments: green/yellow/red packets corresponding to qualifiers like below, far below, basic, proficient, advanced. Students in each one of these categories vary quite a bit depending on the TEK or the assignment so students have no issue with having green one day and red the next. 
  • Questions Tied to Learning Targets: Learning target proficiencies can be made available to students so they can track their own data and be in charge of their own learning.
  • A Robust Built-in Math Equation Editor: Math teachers will flip-out AND the tool is web-based so they can do this process on the iPad if they choose.
  • Lots of Sorting and Reporting Available: Teachers can randomize questions, resort students by score, export data as a csv.

ExitTicket Availability:

ExitTicket is available to the public (some features and functionality are FREE and others are premium). Their resource center is also pretty comprehensive. It includes a four week lesson plan for trainers, a video library, and much, much more.

How many other districts could there possibly be that design a tool to support their own students? Up until a few weeks ago, I thought this phenomenon was a fluke… until I met Greg McIntyre, Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at College Station ISD. I popped into his session after my morning keynote, and was thoroughly jazzed by his story!

“College Station ISD felt their middle-of-the-road and struggling students were not being adequately supported so they created their own “Just in Time Learning” portal entitled Success 24/7” – Greg McIntyre

Now at first I was skeptical. As many of our own teachers upload lectures and notes for students… I wasn’t entirely sure this was any different. Greg did clearly state what the tool wasn’t. It is not intended to be full blown lessons, flipped instruction, or an online course… more just a support of learning.

A Sampling of Success 24/7 Features with Power-Packed Potential:

  • One-Stop-Shop: All of the content (created by teachers in the district) for a course is in one place so students are not visiting multiple teacher sites or at a disadvantage if their course instructor doesn’t provide additional support materials. 
  • Designed for the End User: The interface and dashboard is designed for the end user and students constantly provide valuable feedback. Additional features such as voting on videos, shorter video clips, and the option to remove white space for easier viewing on the bus have been added at student’s requests.
    • Vocab: Vocabulary is built in to the system.
    • Assessments: Assessments are also available. These are assessments for students – like practice exams. Students can take a test and then they manage their own results and see what other content they need to review (yes, assessments FOR learning). Assessments also serve as prescriptions for instruction for the students.
    • To Do Lists and Reminders: Students have their own customizable dashboard with to-do lists, reminders, and they can view their own reports.
  • Credit Recovery: They are even using the learning portal as credit recovery. Greg said they have essentially trashed the model of “fail first semester and then go to credit recovery.” Now students receive a prescription within the first six weeks. They go to the site and complete the modules prescribed and then are allowed to take a 6 weeks exam to earn credit back for the course. This allows then to not fall so far behind that they can’t catch up. Additionally, he mentioned they had 35 students stay after early release to take 6 weeks exams to receive credit back.

Success 24/7 is currently only available to students within the district. However, they have created a demo version with limited functionality for outside districts to explore.

Multipurpose Monday: A Motley of iPad Bingo Cards

I stumbled upon an iPad Bingo Card a few weeks ago in a discussion thread. If there was one… I assumed there had to be more… After a few minutes of Google searches, I had collected 8 of these little gems!

iPad Bingo Cards for Professional Development: In an effort at brevity with this post, I have curated all 8 into a new Pinterest Board entitled iPad Bingo.

Extending the Tool: Truly this motley of gamification professional development tools are multi-purpose and can be adapted to a variety of instructional settings. Consider creating an iPad Bingo Chart for:

  • Different Tasks for one full-featured open-ended app (e.g. Padlet, Explain Everything, Keynote, Tackk)
  • A Differentiated Audience (create 3 levels of Bingo Cards based on the skill set of the room or one for each content area)
  • A Theme or Topic (create a Bingo Card for flipped learning, assessment, or critical thinking)

Creating the Cards: Bingo Cards can be created using a variety of tools. Allanah King used a Google Doc to create hers so it would be editable and even included a separate resource for those that needed additional support with each one of the tasks. Joshua Borzick went one step further and created an entire Google Site devoted to support their iPad Bingo professional development resource.

Thrifty Tuesday: Transformational iPad Grants

TechChef4u devotes the majority of posts to the transformational power of technology integration. While “technology is rarely the goal”, truly access to the technology and device is integral.

Recently I was perusing one of my favorite sites for iPads and Art, Dryden Art (see original TechChef4u feature of Dryden Art page), and discovered that not only does she post amazingly awesome and spectacularly creative student examples… much of her technology was actually funded through grants as thinglinked below.

“We just finished an 18 month journey to raise funds every way we could to become a 1:1 iPad art room. Our goal was just reached in March 2014.” – Tricia Fuglestad

More often than not schools are unable to make the 1:1 leap and opt for internally-funded carts and class sets of devices and external grants. As I am not as familiar with grant writing and the process that it entails…, I asked the expert, Tricia Fuglestad. Not a hoarder of secrets, I decided to share her responses with the global edu-sphere:

Are these grants in house (money from PTO) or are they found online and available to all?

  • “I have been pursuing in house grants mostly. I have my grants posted for anyone to borrow from here. We received funds from district grants, fundraising via Edbacker.com, DonorsChoose.org, entering contests (won 3 with prize $ that went towards iPads), and fundraising through Artsonia.com”

How would you say these grants have ultimately impacted your classroom and your students?

  • “We would have very little tech if we didn’t seek alternative means to get it. Fundraising, grant writing, and contests got us everything from our smart board, projectors, to our 25 iPads. My district provides the art program a desktop computer and wifi access. At the beginning of this school year we had 12 iPads for student use in the art room from our previous efforts including our second place win in the McGraw-Hill STEMie awards. This meant that every time we created, one waited. It dictated how I would teach, how little we could accomplish, and how much ownership the students would have in their pieces. Sharing is great, but all the time wasn’t so great. After a big push this year, we finally have all the iPads we need to do whatever makes the most sense for learning content. Our limitations are gone! THAT is the best situation for meaningful technology integration.”

What advice would you give to other teachers seeking technology for their classroom?

  • “My first suggestion is to make a wish from iPevo’s wishpool. In a few minutes you can express a need for the monthly offering and it might arrive at your doorstep soon. My next suggestion is crowdfunding via sites like Donor’s Choose or Edbacker.com. Our projects were funded from generous donors from within our community, around the country (and world) who support engaging projects. It was also a wonderful advocacy tool for promoting our art program. Here is an example of our latest donor’s choose project. Wicked-Good Wednesday: 3 Ideas Worth Stealing

I have found through countless speaking engagements and professional development workshops, what we may think is obvious or even “tired” … is sometimes exactly what someone has been looking for. On that same note, many times all it takes is a sample or a nibble of a great idea to spark creative juices.

So, this alliterative Wednesday post is devoted to just that…Wicked Good Ideas Worth Stealing.

In an era of app-smashing and rapid ebb, flow, and feeds of ideas, truly…

What catches the TechChef’s eye? Clever items and purposeful ideas that can be adapted and remixed for different settings (e.g. classroom, stations, professional development…) as well as a myriad of uses and content areas. We are all inspired by others and today I want to share with you three ideas and a group of educators that inspires me…

App Dice: As part of their professional development objective for App + App + App= Lesson, Annie Barton (@anniebarton0) and Hayley Schirmer (@schirmer_hayley) “encouraged teachers to implement a culture of planning lessons around using apps that meet a certain criteria, rather than specific apps.”

This little gem crams choice, app smashing, and exploration in to a space smaller than a crouton. And I definitely had a “Why didn’t I think of this?” moment. So to explore this recipe for learning, you will need:

  • DiceEach die was based on a different principle of the E5 Instructional model (e.g. Explore, Explain, Elaborate) and apps were then selected to be used with each principle and assigned to be sides of the die.
  • Idea cards were also prepared for each app to provide additional curricular examples and ideas.

Daily 5 App Menu: This creation from third grade teacher Monica Evon is definitely a keeper and a perfect recipe for learning. Everyone likes choice and this cleverly created menu is easily adaptable with additional activities and apps.

Weaving Rainbow Loom Math-ness with SAMR

Sometimes a gem of #awesomesauce falls in your lap when you least expect it. If you are not familiar with the Rainbow Loom craze that has swept the nation and has sold over 3.5 million looms worldwide, let me provide a little context. The Rainbow Loom is essentially a loom that allows you to weave bracelets, necklaces, and accessories from multi-colored rubber bands… with very few directions provided.

In fact, all of our creations… (Yes, my son has also fallen prey to the craze and sucked me in) … have been developed by watching YouTube videos.

“Okay, I get it, TechChef…Rainbow Loom calls upon online learning… but really? Why pray tell, are we focusing an entire blog post on a craft item…?”

Rainbow Loom Math-Ness: Up until this morning, I saw this item as just that… a creative craft item. But we all know a tool is only as innovative as the purpose and intent we assign to it. One student took this tool and gave it a creative educational spin and I simply couldn’t help but share:

Rainbow Loom Educational Value: Being ultimately very intrigued and caught off guard by this delightfully educational twist, I decided to google “Rainbow Loom Math” and discovered multiple articles (listed below) citing educational benefits from this trend ranging from patterning and sequencing to hand-writing, self-learning, persistence, and even frustration tolerance:

Rainbow Loom TRANSFORMED: Truly, the Rainbow Loom is merely a tool… and the TechChef would not leave a post without a sound pedagogical connection. So let me guide you down the cookie crumb trail of transformational learning. After finding myself deep in the haze of the google bermuda triangle, I discovered this article, “And Just How Does Rainbow Loom Fit Into Library and School?”. Moments later… something snapped and the SAMR Rainbow Loom Model was born (in both Thinglink and Quizlet deck options):

This interactive graphic and linked Quizlet is in no way meant to be a definitive SAMR guide but more a way to provide relatable talking points for transforming a concrete tool into a redefined learning experience. I will tell you that I struggle with clearly delineating the SAMR levels – while the tasks move up the SAMR ladder, there is definitely some overlapping between levels…hmm… there may even be a not-so-subtle metaphor woven in… 😉

Shakespeare: Blending the Bard with 21st Century Technology

I have always fancied the work of Shakespeare and what better way to make it come to life than with app-propriate technology integration… on Valentine’s Day.

In preparation for S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR, I happed upon a SAMR Shakespeare Quizlet deck.

While I like the idea and alliteration of SAMR Shakespeare, I think the Redefinition level could be pushed a little to integrate more collaboration with experts or publishing of fan fiction. I think this article about Shakespeare and Skype. For a final project, the student:

“interviewed several generations of a family in Argentina, then created an e-book version of “Taming of the Shrew” set in the Carnival of Argentina. – Skyping Shakespeare Emory College

Truly such an authentic experience was transformative:

“I feel like I’ve learned how to make international connections and I feel spurred on to read more Shakespeare plays,” – Skyping Shakespeare Emory College

Lawrence Reiff (@Mrreif), Google Certified Teacher and fellow Apple Distinguished Educator, is an English Language Arts teacher at Roslyn High School in Roslyn, New York. I caught his presentation at iPad Summit in Boston and app-solutely loved it. I was granted a follow-up conversation with him at an Apple event where he shared additional student projects. The technology in his classroom affords his students the ability to go beyond enhancement (simply reading classic literature such as The Odyssey, Romeo & Juliet or Beowulf) and extend to transformation as students can create film scenes and animations, generate graphic novels, and employ social networking – all on the same device:

“Most importantly, the iPad allows his students to make connections between classic literature and their modern lives. For example, if Romeo and Juliet were alive today, they would certainly have Facebook profiles. What would they look like? Who would be on Romeo’s friends list?  What bands would Juliet like?  Students then use the iPad to create profiles for the main characters. As they read the play, they update the profiles. When students see how quickly Romeo’s relationship status changes, they understand him better as a character.” – Lawrence Reiff

So how can you build these connections to the Bard using 21st century technologies as a bridge! Well…for that I have compiled a Smore which includes:

Redefine and Remix your PD… Together!

I have to say I am overjoyed to find how popular and widely accepted the S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR model is. In less than a week, the post and interactive infographic has received over 3,000 views and almost 7,500 tag hovers. What I find most intriguing is the global impact of publishing online. The materials were originally designed to be delivered in a workshop here in Austin, Texas. However, making the infographic available online has garnered some worldwide social media. Below are a few examples:

S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR Floats on the Twitters

While it is always fun to see your materials and blogs tweeted and translated in to other languages. Truly, the reason I created and published the resource has little to do with international social media fame. It was ultimately a labor of love designed to demystify the model (as admittedly… it was even a little difficult for me to process and apply at first) and provide real world ideas for integration that anyone could digest.

But I feel like I can take this one step further… Truly the height of the SAMR model is about creating authentic learning experiences that draw from collaboration, online publishing, and even formative assessment. During the TCEA workshop, many thoughtful conversations were had amongst the attendees. In hindsight, I wish I had designated a scribe to document the insights, questions, and critical conversations to archive and share with others that were not able to attend.

The S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR workshop delivered at TCEA is officially over, BUT truly we never stop learning and extending our knowledge. So… I had an idea. Why not create a Google Form to collect input on the course as well as ideas for polishing and refining it? I know this idea isn’t truly new but I have added a few elements that I hope give it a spin:

  • Feedback on Content and Clarity of the Course
  • Resources that need to be added
  • Location Data to Create a BatchGeo Interactive Reflection map
  • Visible Thinking Strategies for Reflection

Wanted to ensure visibility and flexibility of content and feedback, I set the form options to publish and show a link to the results of the form as well as the option to edit responses after submitting if need be.

S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR: Toolkit for Educators to Transform Instruction

TCEA is upon us and clearly SAMR is a hot topic. I had the pleasure to meet the father of the SAMR model (check out recaps of his sessions HERE), Dr. Ruben Puentedura ***, last year at iPad Summit and have spent the past few months digesting, research, and curating SAMR resources for teachers. (Don’t Miss “Groovy Graphics in the iClassroom”!)

In order to provide teachers with an easy to follow framework to digest and apply the model to their own practices and instruction, I decided to create my own acronym, S.A.S.S.Y. based on an adaptation of Dr. Ruben’s app classification… the Ed Tech Quintet:

  • S: STUDENTS and Storytelling
  • A: Awesome ASSESSMENT (Teacher-Driven and Student-Driven)
  • S: SOCIAL (Voice and Collaboration)
  • S: SEEK: Research and Visualization (Finding it, Citing it, and Displaying it)
  • Y: YOU: Think about Your Own Thinking…

Once the acronym was in place, I built an infographic and then thing linked app-tivities and instructional resources on top of it.

Many times teachers see different apps placed at different levels of the SAMR spectrum and assume that an app can only work at one level or just because they use an app that their instruction is automatically at the augmentation or redefinition level.

To this end the infographic includes 5 pieces of support materials:

  • Quizlet decks: with SAMR ladders/flows using the same app so teachers and educators get a better feel for what that might look like in a classroom.
  • Haiku Deck: to provide additional frame of reference and background knowledge for SAMR.
  • 4 Questions: to extend beyond enhancement… is your lesson transformative?
  • Google Presentation: where teachers can build and share their own SAMR flows once they feel comfortable.
  • Additional Support Resources: which include direct links to Dr. Ruben’s site, video, and presentations as well as 60+ SAMR examples and instructional resources.

The 4 Questions are in no way comprehensive but are designed to provide additional clarification when deciding if technology integration is an enhancement or truly is transformative:

  1. Does the technology/tool allow for collaboration (e.g. within a school, district, state, nation, globe, experts, PLN)?
  2. Does the technology/tool allow for feedback and formative assessment?
  3. Does the technology/tool allow for publishing to an authentic audience and archival?
  4. Is the technology/tool student-driven?

I have to say I am super stoked to debut S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR to the greater educational blogosphere and hope that it will be a useful resource for those that are trying to navigate through and digest the framework.
