The Thinglink Ripple Effect

As we all know, the holidays are a very busy time of year. November felt like it flew by and I didn’t even get a chance to reflect on an amazing mobile conference… iPad Summit. My last post focused on my session “Designing Thinking Around Thinglink”.

While Thinglink is offering FREE Premium access to teachers that sign up before the end of December (more info here and Cathy details the upgraded features here)… and I have received multiple thinglinks from participants since the event, I thought I would spend some time showcasing the ripple effect of amazing educationally focused thinglinks.

Ian Simpson (@familysimpson): We first met on Twitter and chatted about Boston eateries and then hung out in person and toured historic Boston and even visited the Harvard iLab (more on that in an upcoming post). Ian created an iPad Summit Thinglink from a Paper by FiftyThree image and thinglinked it as a way to quickly reference all of his learning from the event.

Truly as thinglink is the little black dress of web and mobile tools (thanks to Michelle Cordy @cordym for coining that phrase)… the tool can be used as a canvas to create anything in virtually any educational setting.

“I’m going to use it to make my CPD blog posts more visual, I’m also going to use it with my Computing Science classes and creative writing extra- curricular club!!” – Ian Simpson

 

Courtney Pepe (@iPadqueen2012): Courtney is a fellow Apple Distinguished Educator and had to do a bit of session hopping as there were a few of us presenting in the same time slot. That being said, she caught the first part of my sesssion (reflections HERE) and later created her own thinglink for how to create a course in iTunes U.

Corinne Gilbert (@cogilbert): Corinne attended and shared her cleverly created Canva and Thinglink app smash which… (I’ll admit after a bit of Google translation, I found)… is chocked full of resources for parenting in a digital era to promote a conference designed for parents.

Corinne also used the Canva/Thinglink app smash to invite educators to an event called (Un Souper Pédagogique Presque Parfait) Traduction which translates to an almost perfect pedagogical dinner which is a monthly event for educators who wish to meet to discuss pedagogy.

But wait… there’s more. The beauty of having a hashtag and sharing creations on various social networks is that people that cannot attend in person benefit as well. Lindsey Rosie and April Requard were two such people:

Lindsey Rosie (@lizzielu48): Lindsey virtually attended the session (from Switzerland) via the resources being shared out on Twitter and later posted her creation on Twitter. She dabbled in using screenshots of Java to illustrate the nuances of coding as part of her course in Schoology and shared some of her insights into future uses with the tool:

“I will use thinklink to annotate code in java lessons, as a review tool for units as I like the idea of embedding items onto mind maps to create interactive revision tools linked to both the school and external sources.”

Lindsey went on to share an idea for grades and 9 and 10 to have a mood board where students can link images and help videos to support their projects:

“It would eliminate a lot of writing for the students and therefore be beneficial for eal and ls students as well as more fun for others.”

April Requard (@aprilrequard) also attended virtually:

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t in attendance, however, as a Twitter and Facebook follower, I loved your reflections and the ideas shared. I was specifically turned on to creating images using Canva and making the images interactive with Thinglink. The possibilities for teacher presentations as well as creative content by students is truly endless. I’m totally addicted! ” – April Requard

April created two amazingly beautiful app-smashed creations using Canva and Thinglink for her upcoming December presentations.

April went on to share with me her love for these creative tools:

Designing Thinking Around Thinglink

It is no secret that the TechChef is a #fangirl of Thinglink and an avid proponent of creating media for teachers and students that meets instructional needs in a whimsical way. Polishing my presentation resources for my session at iPad Summit Boston and waiting to power up my Mac on the flight, I happed upon an article in the Southwest Airlines magazine that really spoke to me…“Because I said I would”. The notion is about keeping promises but one quote in particular really stood out to me…”

Thus, my “Designing Thinking with Thinglink” mini workshop session is truly designed to do just that…influence others to knead differentiated instruction, visible thinking, whimsy, engagement, formative assessment, enrichment, and app synergy into their instructional resources and classrooms. And what better way to do that…then model it. The Thinglink resource below was created with a Canva image and then thinglinked with additional resources. Technology in the Early Grades

As a former elementary teacher and mom of two primary-age mobile natives, I was thrilled to get the opportunity to share resources and support for integrating and managing devices in the early grades with one of my favorite elementary teachers, Lisa Carnazzo, at Tech Forum Austin.

Both Lisa’s (myself and Lisa C) have prepared fairly thorough resources for this presentation. Lisa Carnazzo focused more on student products that met state and national standards as well as global communication with parents and beyond and shares her content in the slideshare embedded below:

Primary Digital Book Reports

In preparation for this week’s Tech Forum Austin presentation entitled, “Technology in the Early Grades”, I have been gathering some resources and examples to share that exhibit evidence of learning.

App-Smashed Book Reports: This one in particular was a book report project for my primary-age son. He was given the task to illustrate and briefly describe each part of the story from his Amelia Bedelia book. While his illustrations and text were fairly clear, I felt he had more to say beyond the paper. Thus, I opted to app-smash his book report using the following tools:

  1. Camera: Take a picture of each hand drawn illustration.
  2. Tellagami (app): Create a Tellagami for each section using the matching hand-drawn background saved to the camera roll. Email Tellagami published link after each section.
  3. Croak.it (app): Record audio in Croak.it. Email the published link after each section.
  4. Canva (web app): Create a Canva to house all of the illustrations. Download final Canva image.
  5. Thinglink (web app): Upload Canva image and Thinglink it with Tellagami’s and Croak.it’s.

Truly, it sounds more laborious than it actually was. As this was a primary student project, all of the drawings and audio (the meat of the content) were created by the student, and the teacher (myself in this scenario) simply offered some assembly assistance with the resource.

Tools with Audio and Drawing Capability: While there are multiple ways to achieve a book report on an iPad with a primary-aged student, it is important to look for apps and tools that allow students the ability to incorporate audio and their own drawings.

Fortunately, one of my favorite book creation apps, Book Creator, just released an update to now include a drawing feature (which nicely finishes out the tool that already encapsulated text, audio, photo, and video import capability)!!!

Scribble Press also offers the ability to draw and it just so happens that my fellow iVenger Ed Tech, Marianna Husain posted a fantastic blog post with multiple examples on the Bobcat blog. The examples are not a book report but do incorporate storytelling, illustrations, and publishing.

Creative Book Reports on the iPad: With a device in hand, the sky is the limit for innovative book reports. The iPadders site offers 23 iPad Alternatives to the Book Report. ICT with Miss C shares an intermediate iLesson on fractured fairy tales using Scribble Press and iMovie trailers that is simply enchanting. Brianna Hodges shares some fantastic resources for differentiated book reports using a select handful of tools.

Whatever the tool, providing support and opportunities for young learners to “begin to define themselves as writers” and a venue for them to express their thoughts and ideas within the classroom and beyond is a critical and essential objective.

The Shift from Creating ON the iPad to Creating FOR the iPad

Many times I post articles on creation-based tasks for teachers and students. This morning I would like to share a story about a Westlake High School student that saw an educational need and began creating content FOR the iPad. And this is where our story begins….

Reposting excerpts from an original post I wrote for the WHS WIFI blog.

Filling an Educational Need

At the end of his Sophomore year, Michael found that there was no iOS friendly fingerspelling app that truly met the needs of a secondary student  (e.g. vocabulary, speed, age-appropriate graphics and feedback) and/or was reasonable in cost. So what does a High School Computer Science student taking American Sign Language classes do to fill the void? With a little help from fellow WHS students… Michael went to work over the summer to code his first app using Objective C, ASL Finger-Spelling and released it October 3rd. (Video below created with video from earlier version of app.)

Meeting the Needs of WHS Students and Beyond

Multiple students currently enrolled in WHS’s ASL classes truly appreciated Michael’s lend-a-hand approach to filling a need for this resource and note that the app was:

“the only way we can practice and recognize finger-spelling (short of) standing in front of a mirror”

and that the practice the app provides allows them to “catch up with someone that fingerspells really fast.”

Collaboration and Peer Feedback to Polish the App

Mrs. Vinson’s ASL classes are even providing valuable user feedback to Michael so he can polish the app for the next update. Michael also has plans to add ASL 1-4 lists of words (in addition to the 5,000 most commonly used words already in the current version) in an upcoming release.

21st Century Learning Epitomized

Truly, this shift from Creating ON the iPad to Creating FOR the iPad has its foundation in 21st Century Skills and is a perfect example of why students should be allowed time for choice and inquiry-based learning. A Teach Thought article highlights 4 essential rules of 21st Century Learning focusing on student-centered instruction, collaboration, contextual learning, and integrating school into society:

“With the powers of technology and the internet, students of today can do even more. Our community is no longer just the area of space located around the school, but reaches out and envelopes the world.”

Truly, this shift in education and creation makes me wonder if we shouldn’t start teaching coding much earlier in school…And on that note, sharing a List.ly of Apps to build and support programming skills in elementary and intermediate age students.

Connected Educators: Digital Citizenship Survival Kit

Before I share multiple resources to support healthy connected learning online, I would like to impart one more reason why sharing online is so integral to the future of education and to transforming our pedagogy. I can’t tell you how many resources and tools I glean from social networks and blogs every day. I feel blessed to have a venue to share and humbled and energized when educators utilize and extend the information and resources I share (much like the author of the iPadYouPad blog did when she found a great article on exit and admit tickets prompted by my earlier post). 

Friends Central School

Earlier in the month, I delivered a parent presentation at the Friends’ Central School in Pennsylvania on “Staying Sane in Cyberspace”. The seminar focused on resources to support parents with managing devices at home: screen time, pedagogy, internet safety, responsible use, digital footprints, eportfolios, and much more.

This morning I discovered a post on the Digital Citizenship Survival Kit by Craig Badura. I have to say that taking real world objects and using them as metaphors for health and wellness online was simply brilliant! Being a Thinglinker, I began toying with the idea of building upon his creation and doing a little web app-smashing:

  • Canva:  I turned to the web tool Canva (still in closed Beta) to create the image
  • Thinglink: Then I uploaded the image to Thinglink and added links and additional information to each nubbin.
  • BounceApp: Finally, I used the BounceApp to highlight each portion of Craig’s article that referenced the object in the picture.

(And of course, I emailed Craig for permission prior and gave him credit for the original image and content that I embellished.)

A big thank you to Craig for letting me bedazzle his image with interactive nubbins.

iPad Journals as an Exit Ticket

iVocabulary: The Power of an Idea Shared

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Truly, I do not spend my day drinking iced lattes and googling myself… Today, one of Instructional Partners emailed me about some of the vocabulary resources I had shared utilizing iPads. Rather than log in to my Thinglink on iVocabulary, I googled “iVocabulary” and found….Melanie Burford’s Thinglink on iVocabulary. I am humbled and blessed by her kind words and flattery (as seen in image above).

While both of our Thinglinks are game boards and offer apps for iVocabulary on Listly’s (mine is the Scrabble board above and hers the game board below), I truly love what happens to an idea shared.


I really feel like Melanie polished the iVocabulary idea and added elements to hers that met the needs of her learners:

  • First, hers is a game board so learners will follow the resources in a sequential progression
  • Second, she created her own Listly’s and narrowed down the app choices that were originally presented
  • Third, she added Padlet at the first turn so learners could collaboratively brainstorm their integration ideas and have them archived for later reference
  • Fourth, she added a more formal exit ticket in the form of a Google Form for learners to share a more specific integration idea

One of my favorite examples was a Frayer model found on the web and completed in Explain Everything and a charming Videolicious of a student explaining the meaning of “frantically” and using it in context. Though the “Dont’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” ala Puppet Pals is a close third.

And truly… back to my not so subtle discussion about sharing online… I think  Melanie sums it up:

“I need to thank Lisa Johnson from Eanes ISD for many of the ideas in this presentation. I’m so glad she shares and publishes her work online for all to see.” – Melanie Burford

Melanie cited my work in her own presentation. Many times I choose a Creative Commons license for my work. If you plan on publishing online, consider using this resource. My advice would be to choose to allow modification of your work (as long as others share alike) but to restrict commercial use of your work (so others can not profit from work you freely distribute online). If you base your creations on someone else’s, another way to provide credit to the original is to include a Source work URL:

What’s Your Flavor of PD

Seated at an airport charging terminal with my Mifi and an off brand vanilla latte (ugh… No Starbucks in PHL), I wanted to share a few Professional Development resources that I have found useful over the past few weeks.

Truly PD comes in all shapes, sizes, and formats from traditional workshops and seminars to more nontraditional flavors (e.g. podcasts, Twitter chats, and Smores). For the purpose of this post, I want to spend some time focusing on alternative means of professional learning.

Smores: Laura Chaffey (@laurachaffey) uses one of my favorite web tools, Smore, to create beautiful technology infused newsletters that accompany an on-site professional development and then pins them on Pinterest for quick reference. Laura shares multiple forms of media in these online posters on topics ranging from literary resources and digital texts to apps and even student examples. Whether you are able to attend the sessions in person or simply consuming them from afar, these Smores are a tasty morsel! (Another tool to create these types of resources for teachers is MailChimp – stay tuned for an upcoming blog on this tool).

Twitter Chats: Recently I co-moderated my first twitter chat – #caedchat (9/29). The topic for the night was “iPads in Education” and Jessica Pack (@Packwoman208) and John Stevens (@Jstevens009) did a most excellent job of preparing questions ahead of time to lead the discussion. The 8 questions for the hour ranged from “What iPad setup do you currently have at your site/classroom? (1:1, 2:1, some, 1, etc)” and “How do you incorporate the SAMR model when designing activities?” to challenges, tips for integration, and even student samples.

Definitely a lively chat with lots of great tweeps chiming in! If you decide to take the plunge into Twitter Chats, I would highly advise a tool like Twubs or TweetChat to channel the #. Many of these tools will allow you to control the speed of the conversation and even pause it. It is an extremely rapid fire approach to PD and certainly not for those that find it difficult to follow more than one conversation at a time. The good news is that it is archived so you can always scroll through the chat at a later date and time but I think there is something so meaningful about synchronously participating in the live discussion with educators all over the country and receiving immediate feedback.

iVengers Radio: I might be partial to this little gem. As Yolanda has moved to Qatar, I think it is suffice it to say that “Appy Hours 4 U” is probably dead. Pause for a moment of silence… But in its wake, Carl Hooker (@mrhooker), Greg Garner (@classroom_tech), and @iPadSammy, and I have initiated iVengers Radio. While iPadSammy is no longer with the Eanes iVenger crew in the second season (he has moved in to the private sector), the show must go on…

Differentiated Professional Development: While we may consider providing choice to our students, many times a one-size fits all approach to professional development is prescribed. Truly we are a heterogenous group of adult learners and we respond differently to multiple approaches to instruction and learning. Whether you relish a firehose of educational support and lively discussion via a Twitter chat, prefer to scan through your PD in a newsletter fashion, or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park or grocery store accompanied by your earbuds and the iVenger crew, consider the multitude of non-traditional approaches to professional development for yourself and fellow educators.

App Integration Snapshots

Marianna Husain (@mhusain), fellow iVenger and author of the Bobcat blog, had the idea to create easy to follow handouts for teachers on a weekly basis to support them with the multitude of apps available on the elementary devices (see full list of 150+ apps here). As there are 6 elementaries and 9-10 ed techs creating these resources on a rotating basis, I suggested a template to streamline the process and make them appear more uniform.

In reviewing the apps listed, I felt that they fell into 3 natural categories: tools, activities, and products:

While creating a template for each of the three categories, I decided to also complete each template for an app that fell in that category. Truly, my heart lies in curriculum and creating curricular and professional development resources for educators because I had a blast putting these together.
