iPads: 3 Purposeful Perspectives

The beginning of school is always busy… hence the delay in TechChef blog posts. Many times we are just trying to troubleshoot, set up procedures, and grasp ideas and best practices that will support us and our teachers in the weeks to come. While you wait for the next TechChef blog post, “Epic Canva Hacks”, I thought I would share these 3 articles I have written for Edutopia to support iPads being used in three very different… yet purposeful settings.

What Have you Cooked up for Administrators?

The first, and most recent, is designed for administrators to support them when they walk in to a classroom that uses iPads (or really any mobile device) instructionally. It includes 20+ Look-Fors.

What Have you Cooked up for Instructional Support Staff?

The second is designed to provide ideas (and examples) on how to use tools like Nearpod, Padlet, and Google Forms to gain valuable data about participants prior to delivering professional development.

What Have you Cooked up for Teachers?

The third is four student projects that illustrate how students can blend paper and pencil tasks with digital tools in a purposeful manner and includes five guiding questions.

Hope everyone’s beginning of the year is going well. While this post serves as a healthy instructional staple, please know that I have every intention to dazzle your taste buds for the creative with a most decadent dose of digital delight soon… on the topic of Canva Hacks.

Noteworthy Nearpod

Today I had the app-ortunity to blend tips as well as pedagogy and best practices for using the Nearpod formative assessment solution. Mike Amante (@mamante) at APPitic kindly hosted and archived the entire webinar for those that were not able to attend the live version.

Nearpod Teacher Set-Up Demo: If you are looking for a Nearpod How-To, this may not be the webinar for you. While I did give a fairly in-depth live demo of how to create a Nearpod presentation and provided information about what types of media and activities can be included (through about 13:16 of the webinar)

Nearpod Tips, Tricks, and Best Practices:  … two-thirds of the the webinar (from about 14:11 on) focused on Tips, Tricks, Best Practices, Integration Examples, and Much More.

Fostering the 3 F’s of Formative (Frequent, Fruitful, and Functional) Assessment

Eanes ISD has developed a two day Professional Learning Conference for their staff. During a session on the “Art of Questioning”, Pam Harris (@pwharris) discussed the difference between social and logical knowledge and provided some very useful examples. Her tips and anecdotes really set the stage for my session on formative assessment as her strategies could be applied to the tools that I would be sharing in the afternoon.

How did I ever know what my students were thinking before these fundamental digital delights? This session will showcase three tools that can be accessed on any mobile device to provide instant and formative and fetching and fascinating details about your student’s current understanding. Please bring a mobile device (e.g. iPad or Laptop) and an old exam you would like to freshen up. We will fire up our session with Infuse Learning and Nearpod and flash out new features in Google Forms. This session is meant to forge ahead through 3 tools and whet your appetite for integrating formative assessment in your classroom in the upcoming year.

Using Nearpod as a vehicle, I delivered a session on formative assessment to secondary teachers using three of my favorite tools: Nearpod, Google Forms, and Infuse Learning. Multiple participants wanted to review the materials after the presentation, so I decided to enable the “homework” version of the presentation… and share it with the greater education blogosphere too… that’s y’all… just so you know 😉

While you don’t have access to the pedagogy and tips I shared during the session, hopefully the resources inspire you to conduct more formative assessment with your students and provide a few interesting ideas. Please continue to share and share alike… for truly FORmative assessment ultimately benefits our students!

The PIN for the presentation is “HPKVY” and you will need to enter Nearpod as a student (rather than a teacher).

TechChef4u wants to hear from YOU: Please share how you using technology as a vehicle for ongoing formative assessment with your students in the comments or with lisa.johnson@techchef4u.com – would love to share your anecdotes and feature examples in an upcoming post.

Teacher iPad Orientation Toolkit: 6 Tools Every Teacher Should Master

Recently I co-facilitated an iPad 101 workshop for secondary teachers with fellow iVenger colleagues (@mryenca, @classroom_tech, and @fiskeclass). As we are a K-12 1:1 school district, this course was not a “just the basics” course but truly designed to meet the individual needs of each of the learners. After introductions, we asked each attendee what they wanted to learn. While we didn’t plan it, naturally… many of the proposed topics fell into the usual categories: workflow, organization, assessment, etc…

iPad Workshop

… Over the past few weeks, multiple posts and articles have popped up with some stellar resources to prepare teachers of mobile learning with the supplies they need to be successful in the 2013-2014 school year.

A few of my favorites (which are also linked within the Thinglink below) are:

  1. A Practical Guide for Teachers Who Just Got iPads
  2. 9 Starter Tips for Teachers Who Just Got iPads
  3. 15 Things Every Teacher Should Be Able to Do with their iPad (the jailbreaking one is questionable but the other 14 are worth a gander)
  4. 10 Tips for Managing an iPad Classroom
  5. iPad Integration: Phase 1 (which mentions the iTunes U course “Exploring the iPad in Classroom Instruction”)

So in the interest of providing a resource to support those of you embracing a 1:1 or embarking on your own mobile journey, I smashed two of my favorite web tools (easel.ly and thinglink) to assemble a list of 6 apps (but really types of tools) that every teacher in a mobile classroom should master… and a few professional development ideas for each.

Without further ado… I will bid you adieu and unveil the Teacher iPad Orientation Toolkit.

Hover over the image for hidden gems and goodies. 😉

App Smackdown: Teacher Tool Style

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to share apps and productivity tools for teachers on a panel with 3 others at the Tech Forum Atlanta event. It is always app-tastic fun and I even discovered a few gems that I am super enthused to add to my teacher bag of tricks.

Don’t be too bummed if you missed it. Fortunately for you, Tech Forum livestreamed the event and the archived version is available for all.

Watch live streaming video from techlearning at livestream.com
I created a list.ly of the apps and tools that I shared and have added the link to the original panel Google Doc (where the others on the panel added their faves). I also used the Bounce app to provide notes for each of the tools I shared.

[listly id=”3Qh” theme=”light” layout=”full” numbered=”yes” image=”yes” items=”all”]

Which ones would you add? (leave your selections in the comments)

San Antonio Area: If you are in the San Antonio area, I will be presenting at Tech Fiesta April 18th and 19th. Check out the program!

Atlanta Area: If you are in the Atlanta area, I will be presenting at iPad Summit April 11th and 12th.

Nothing But Nearpod

FETC: Met up with CEO of Nearpod

Clearly, we use other apps… but I did need a clever alliteration for this evening’s blog title. A few weeks ago, I attended FETC and got to meet the CEO of Nearpod. He had asked me for a wee sound byte and I obliged by sharing a few ways our iClassrooms are using Nearpod.

For more on Mathy Cathy and Nearpod, check out:

Math isn’t the only content area or audience taking a liking to the app. Recently, Tanna Fiske’s 8th grade students prepared lessons for their 5th grade elementary counterparts using Nearpod as the vehicle for instruction. Read more about this vertically aligned effort here. The video below also does an excellent job of showcasing the student led event.

If you are interested in seeing these iClassrooms in action, consider a site visit to the HCMS campus.
