#ScrapNotes: The Complete Guide to PD Note-Taking

“Um… TechChef… we don’t mean to bug you or anything. We totally appreciate this #scrapnotes kick you are on… but you used to write about technology and stuff… and we were just wondering…” It is totally fine… I know you were all thinking this. I do typically share about technology iOS and web applications and processes. I have decided to broaden that definition, as of lately, to define technology as any tool that students have in their hands… and paper and pen… is still a reality… even in schools with 1:1 iPad, Chromebooks, or carts of iPads. But, I also don’t want to swim so far from the shore that it is too difficult to connect the dots back… so this post is somewhat of a hybrid. To date, I have whet your palette for #Scrapnotes with posts 1 and 2… and now I want to share my process for PD Note-taking which expands the horizon for what is possible with pen, paper, and a device.

My Note-Taking Evolution

Many times there is a multi-pronged goal to notes that we take in professional development. Clearly we want to return to them and utilize them in the future. But many times we also want to share them with staff that didn’t get to attend that session or that conference. Previously to finding myself in an extraordinary note-taking situation, I found myself exploring a variety of options:

  • Conference Collage: At first, I created a collage of images from the conference and then thinglinked it with my notes taken in Evernote or links to particular session resources. (Example: Miami Device 2014).
  • Interactive Maps: Then PhotoMapo caught my attention and I began using it as a point of reference. From there I would add pertinent links on top of the maps. (Example: ETT Austin and Summer of 2014).
  • Crafting in Canva: Finally in 2015, I experimented with creating my own image in Canva and using it as the landscape for Thinglink. This afforded me more customization (and the images were beautiful) but honestly it was far more time-consuming. (Example: TCEA 2015 and SXSWEDU 2015).

So at the end of 2015… I started dabbling with this analog note-taking as I mentioned in blog posts 1 and 2 (linked above). At first, my notes for conferences were still very text heavy. But I noticed very quickly a few benefits. I was more focused on what the speaker was saying as I didn’t have notifications popping up in my “notebook” or a plethora of tantalizing tabs open… including my email. I also was only jotting down what I felt relevant rather than trying to gather everything the speaker said in Evernote. Pretty soon I found myself drawing mind-maps and even icons. And sure enough… I found that this style of note-taking was not only better for me as a conference or workshop participant but provided far more insight and information to the people I then shared my notes with.

But these notes were still flat and to make the learning adventure accessible to everyone… I had to go beyond the page. The beauty of this was simple… I could take a picture of the notes (with practically any device… as Thinglink is device neutral) and then add additional thoughts, links, resources on a dimension above the page… so to speak. I received multiple thanks from a number of staff on this process and I found that having the notes in two places made it easier for me to easily retrieve them whenever I needed to refer to them or share them.

My Process

Now I know you might be wondering which way you ought to go from here? ūüėČ Once you have the notebook you decide to use for your PD Note-taking, I did want to break down my process a bit:

  1. Tabs: I bought Post-it tabs for my notebook (more on supplies in post 4) that I use to separate the notebook for each conference I attend. My intent is to print out labels with titles on them as well… just haven’t had a chance. All of my notes are chronological so this allows me to easily find the notes from the conference or session.
  2. Dates and Titles: In the upper right hand corner, I always include the title of the conference and the date. In the upper left hand corner, I include the name of the session and the speakers and their Twitter handles and emails (if applicable). These get Thinglinked later.
  3. Session Notes: From there, I take notes. I draw icons, build mind-maps and really only write down things that speak to me. Drawing the icons is especially helpful to organize the content. I typically have my phone next to me and I search for an icon and then sketch it while I am listening to the speaker.
  4. More: I oftentimes will go over the notes after the session and add bullets or A, B, C … just to make them a little easier to follow. I will also use the right hand “Action Steps” column in my Behance Action Journal to jot down tools I should look at, next steps, great ideas, etc…

Once the notes are complete, then I snap a pic and Thinglink them with additional info. Below is an example of the interactive Thinglinked notes from the header in this blog post:

I won’t leave you with the lip service… “practice makes perfect” or even “practice makes better”… what I will tell you that with practice… you find your own style and I quite agree that is the best kind of ending… or beginning! ūüėČ

Tangible Technology Tips from and for TCEA 2015

So, I have to say that I try to make it a point to always curate and reflect on my learning from an event… and to cultivate a resource that I can return to and share. To manage this learning experience… I found App-Smashing Canva and Thinglink to be just the ticket. As I get just as much interest in to my process and workflow as I do on the content that I share… I thought I would let you take a sneak peek at my home grown PD Recap Recipe.

How Did You Create this EPIC PD Recap?

  • Choose a Functional Base Image:¬†I always like to start with an image that I can build off of. Fortunately, TCEA’s Flickr feed had just the right pic to start as a base…
  • Add Filter and Flare to Your Image: I loved the dimension to this pic so I used the “TinType 3” filter in the Be Funky Web app to add a bit of grit. (Note: Canva also has built-in image filters but not quite like this one.)
  • Build Your Graphic: Once my base image was ready, I uploaded it to Canva and added pretty much everything else you see in the image below. (Note: A few of the icon graphics I paid for via the Noun Project as I use them fairly regularly and Canva did not have a comparable icon in their gallery.)
  • Add Interactivity to Your Graphic: Once the base graphic is complete, I upload it to Thinglink.. and all the interactivity you see below…and HERE.

WOW! What is Hidden in This Epic PD RECAP?

Well… I am so glad that you asked… I divided this recap into 3 distinct sections:

  • Sessions I Attended FROM TCEA: Sessions I attended are all labeled and linked on the left.
  • Sessions I Presented FOR TCEA: Sessions I presented are all labeled and linked on the right.
  • Miscellaneous Nuggets: Additional learning nuggets that didn’t fit in to either category (but were worth including) got linked on around the table and chairs (also a great reason to select an image with depth and dimension to guide the viewer through each section).

I am not saying that every piece of information that you curate and send to teachers or share with your staff has to go through this process… BUT what I am saying… is that everyone is busy and their time is valuable. As hokey as it may seem, an email without a graphic or image, boasting large bodies of text, and no bullets or means of chunking content will most likely be overlooked or neglected. However, when you spend time to make content look appealing, easily navigable, and brief… people seem to respond and be reached…

iPad Project Menu

As I will be attending and present at TCEA this week, I wanted to leave my campus with a small learning nugget to support them in my absence. I began thinking about most of the questions that I receive that are instructional in nature. Many of them focus on what the best apps and tools are to meet the task. Other inquiries focus on workflow and best practices for publishing.

So… the iPad Project Menu was born. I have to admit that it is somewhat derivative of Tony Vincent’s Show What You Know infographic. I simply tailored the menu to focus on tools and apps that were free (or already provided for FREE to our students via Casper and Self Service), changed up a few of the tasks, and added a second page that addressed many of the questions that I receive when I am planning with teachers. I figured that some of you might enjoy or be inspired by this assembly of resources so I made it available for FREE on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Blending Relatable Resume Resources 4 Students

At the request of a student that was looking for resume templates, I began assembling some relatable and relevant resources. After some research, I found there are two conflicting (or colliding) schools of thought on what these resources should look like and contain: the standard resume versus the creative resume.

Standard Resumes: According to About.com and a study by The Creative Group:

“70% (of employers) preferred traditional resumes (PDF/Word) even for creative jobs. Only 20% were interested in infographics, and fewer preferred a social or online profile (4%) or a video resume (2%).” – About.com

Creative Biographical Resumes: That being said, Michael Margolis argues that your personal story really matters and employers google your talents and biography rather than rely solely on a static resume of credentials:

“Everybody has some credential or another, the way you distinguish and differentiate yourself is with your personal story.” – Michael Margolis

Part of this personal story is told through your social profile pages on sites like Linked.in and About.me.

I think a marriage of both the biography and creative visual resume elements blended with a traditional resume is a great way to establish relevance and quality in the eye of a possible future employer.

Blended Resume Resources Smore: Thus, I decided to concoct a Smore which combines resources and examples to support a blend of both schools of thought. The following Blended Resume Smore includes:

Truly there is no one-size-fits all resume or template. That being said, I hope some of these resources and examples resonate with relevant and relatable ideas that will allow you to equip students with the story and skills to be successful in what lies beyond K-12 and college.

Fictional and Historical Character Resumes… Making Resumes Relevant!¬†But wait… there’s more. Consider taking the above resources and adapting them to a language arts assignment. Rather than composing writing a biography, have students create a standard or even a creative resume. Would William Shakespeare have gotten the job? (more support resources HERE.)

Redefine and Remix your PD… Together!

I have to say I am overjoyed to find how popular and widely accepted the S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR model is. In less than a week, the post and interactive infographic has received over 3,000 views and almost 7,500 tag hovers. What I find most intriguing is the global impact of publishing online. The materials were originally designed to be delivered in a workshop here in Austin, Texas. However, making the infographic available online has garnered some worldwide social media. Below are a few examples:

S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR Floats on the Twitters

While it is always fun to see your materials and blogs tweeted and translated in to other languages. Truly, the reason I created and published the resource has little to do with international social media fame.¬†It was ultimately a labor of love designed to demystify the model (as admittedly… it was even a little difficult for me to process and apply at first)¬†and provide real world ideas for integration that anyone could digest.

But I feel like I can take this one step further… Truly the height of the SAMR model is about creating authentic learning experiences that draw from collaboration, online publishing, and even formative assessment. During the TCEA workshop, many thoughtful conversations were had amongst the attendees. In hindsight, I wish I had designated a scribe to document the insights, questions, and critical conversations to archive and share with others that were not able to attend.

The S.A.S.S.Y. SAMR workshop delivered at TCEA is officially over, BUT truly we never stop learning and extending our knowledge. So… I had an idea. Why not create a Google Form to collect input on the course as well as ideas for polishing and refining it? I know this idea isn’t truly new but I have added a few elements that I hope give it a spin:

  • Feedback on Content and Clarity of the Course
  • Resources that need to be added
  • Location Data to Create a BatchGeo Interactive Reflection map
  • Visible Thinking Strategies for Reflection

Wanted to ensure visibility and flexibility of content and feedback, I set the form options to publish and show a link to the results of the form as well as the option to edit responses after submitting if need be.

iTunes U: PD Please ;)

I have been enamored with iTunes U for some time. When the app-ortunity presented itself to publish my own course, I jumped on it. As Yolanda and I had reunited to present at TCEA 2013, the “student-created books” workshop we had proposed last year for the event fit perfectly as an iTunes U course. At the time we wanted to showcase apps that created books on the iPad rather than simply iBooks Author, as not all classrooms and teachers had access to a Mac. Thus, we reunited to collaborate and create “Student Created Books in the iClassroom”.

The PD iTunes U course includes an app matrix (seen above) of 15 popular book creation apps and video tutorials and student-created examples for each. But wait… that’s not all!

Built in to the course is a teacher task, iLesson templates, pre-planning and additional iResources. One of those iResources is a compilation of apps that support the pre-writing process.

Great example of professional development! by Debbie Smith

This is amazing! What I usually have issues with in iTunes U courses is following the author’s organizational system and trying to make sense of it. Yours is so well organized that I had no trouble with it whatsoever. I think we should use this model for the elementary ed summer PD classes that we are going to develop this sememster.

This iTunes U course was my first and it was awesome! It’s very organized and easy to follow. The number of resources provided are mind blowing! At the end of this course, I was able to create an iBook with ease…and now I plan to take this new knowledge into my classroom and watch my 2nd graders have fun while they turn their writings into creative iBooks to share with their families! If you’re looking for meaningful and useful professional development to do on your own time, at your own pace, I highly recommend this course!

Appy Girl

I recently posted a blog showcasing a scrapbook created by sister-in-law and her daughter using the ScrapPad app (which has recently gone FREE). Today, I would like to share another crafty delight from Mel’s Happy Scrappy Place. Enamored with her Frankengirl and Pumpkin Spice Girl, I asked her to create an Appy Girl. While she created the final product using mixed media. Her initial sketch (to the right) was designed using the Sketchbook Pro app.

While I tend to focus on strictly core curriculum designed iLessons, I always a enjoy a crafty diversion – especially when it showcases how individuals in other fields and careers use the iPad to achieve productivity and support creative tasks.

iVocabulary: TCEA 2013

Reunited…for a workshop at TCEA, Yolanda Barker and I will be presenting “iVocabulary” at TCEA 2013.

iVocabulary Workshop Description:¬† Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking are integral to developing language. This session will utilize the four skills to focus on multiple ways to develop vocabulary utilizing mobile devices in the iClassroom. The tour of resources will include specific content-based glossary apps and apps that allow you to create your own flashcards and personal glossaries (e.g. Quizlet) and apptivities that extend the vocabulary (e.g. creating a Frayer model in Popplet Lite or a vocabulary sorting activity in iCardSort). Vocabulary development will increase with use of video creation utilizing apps like Mad Lips and Puppet Pals. Writing and Reading will be supported with annotation apps (e.g. Notability, PaperPort Notes) and book creation apps (e.g. Scribble Press, Albums FX Lite). The session will culminate with “surprisingly educational” apps that support the four skills (e.g. StoryLines for Schools and TypeDrawing for Free).

Thinglink Framework: Yolanda’s graphically inclined hubby created a Scrabble board to house all of the links for the course. 8 List.ly lists of apps, a Prezi of samples, and much more is hidden in the image below.

A Prezi of iVocab products was created to showcase products and samples for each of the 8 app categories.

Designing Interactivity

By now I am sure you all know I am a bit of an apple fan girl. I have to say that the devices play very well with each other. In preparation for two poster sessions at FETC next week, I began working on a resource that people could take away that would be visual and informative… and perhaps even interactive.

I began creating the resource using the Designs for Pages app on my iPad to create the image below and then emailed the file as a Pages document in order to make some final edits (screenshots tend to be easier) on my Mac. Then it was a matter of saving the doc as an image and uploading it to Thinglink where the interactivity begins… If you look closely, you can even get a sneak peek at the resources for the “iVocabulary” workshop which will be offered at TCEA 2013 in two weeks.
